  JEWISH LEARNING EXPERIENCES (JLE) at TVO

  REGISTRATION 2026-2027

  If you are new to Tikkun v'Or and Jewish Learning Experiences, please contact info@tikkunvor.org before registering.

  Click on REGISTER below to complete the registration process. A separate registration is required for each student.

  We welcome all Jewish students, regardless of the children's and parent(s)’ religious backgrounds, ethnic identities, race, family configuration, gender identity and expression, or sexual orientation.
  

  Family Jewish Learning Experiences is for children in kindergarten (gan) and first grade (kitah alef). This program meets once a month on Saturday mornings, for children and their caregivers.

  Jewish Learning Experiences for students in second/third grade (kitah bet/gimel) meets weekly on Sundays from 9-11 am.

  Jewish Learning Experiences for children in fourth/fifth (kitah dalet/hey) and sixth and seventh grade (kitah vav/zayin) meets weekly on Sundays from 9 am - 12 pm.

  Vav/Zayin (6th and 7th grade) also meets on Wednesdays from 4:30-6 pm. Both Sundays and Wednesday attendance is expected for students in these grades.

  MEMBERSHIP AND TUITION: If your child is in 6th and 7th grade  / b’nai mitzvah, or this is their second year in JLE, you must become dues-paying members in good standing. All fees from previous year must be paid in full to register for a new year. Please see the membership HERE  and then register for MEMBERSHIP HERE

  If this is the first year and your child is in K-5, you have the option of becoming a dues-paying member of TvO right away, OR a "JLE Member" with dues-waived, but paying a slightly higher school rate, Please register as JLE MEMBERS HERE

  Try Out the Jewish Studio Process

  What happens when you combine Jewish text, poetry, great questions and a room full of art supplies? You get lively, deep conversation and inventive visual arts!

  Join Laura Paradise, an expressive arts practitioner to experience the process for yourself. Laura has been working with the Jewish Studio Process (developed by the Jewish Studio Project) for many years. The process weaves together Jewish text study and other source material with discussion, art-making and reflection. On the surface, the process is simple: we read text, we study and discuss together, we move from our heads to a creative open studio space, and we witness our creative work. The result is anything but simple. As we delve into creative expression, we discover insights and depth that enhance our understanding of readings. And we have fun in the process! What makes the process “Jewish” is some of the text used. What makes the process special is its spiritual foundation. The theme will center in Jewish practices around greeting/sanctifying the new moon, as a framework for gathering during the Hebrew months and entering deep time together. You don’t need to be an artist to participate. You only need curiosity, an open mind and a willingness to pick up a pastel or crayon or marker or pencil!   A Charmed Exile: The Thousand Year Jewish presence in Kaifeng, China Sunday November 1 2-3:30pm at TvO Facilitator: Eric Maroney A vibrant and long-lasting Jewish community existed in Kaifeng, China, for nearly 1,000 years. We will be taking a broad, visual look at this community using slides, examining the artifacts that they left behind to get a sense of the kind of Judaism they practiced. We will discuss a wide range of topics, including the group’s geographical origins, their synagogue compound, their connection with other Jewish communities in China, and the books and scrolls they left behind. The Kaifeng Jews provides a clear example of the tremendously malleable nature of Jews’ and Judaism’s ability to blend with surrounding cultures. Eric hopes by showing areas where the Kaifeng Jews accepted or altered Chinese practices, and others where they outright rejected them, we will have a greater understanding of how Judaism works in our own lives.   What is Israel in the Hebrew Bible (Tanakh)? Sunday December 13 2-4pm at TvO Facilitator: Lauren Monroe In this session, we will look at an array of biblical texts each of which expresses a different set of ideas about what Israel is. We will explore the tensions and complexities of biblical definitions and consider how these resonate against modern conceptions of what it means to be Israel. Lauren Monroe is Associate Professor in the Near Eastern Studies department at Cornell University.  She received her PhD in Bible and Ancient Near East from the Skirball Department of Hebrew and Judaic Studies at New York University. Her teaching interests include Hebrew Bible and Biblical Hebrew at all levels, Syro-Palestinian Archaeology, and Ancient Israelite Religious and Social History. She is particularly interested in the way what it meant to be Israel changed over time, and how such changes are reflected in the stratigraphy of the biblical text and the archaeological tel.
