Writing an Ethical Will, with Rabbi Lenore Bohm
A Last Will and Testament transfers possessions and assets. Ethical Wills are designed to pass on wisdom or “spiritual wealth.” Their antecedents are found in the Torah, in Jacob’s parting words to his children and in Moses’ farewell address to the Israelite people. Ethical Wills were commonly written in medieval times when Jewish life was precarious and parents weren’t certain that they would live to teach their children the most important ideas that animated their lives. Today, people of many faith traditions compose Ethical Wills. One doesn’t need to be “religious” or at an elderly age to compose a meaningful Ethical Will; it should be written in your own style(it should sound like you), and it can be revised over time. It is a gift you can leave to those who live on after you (those you know and generations to come), and it is a tool for discerning, at this point in your life, what matters most to you.
