Join Dan Rosenberg, Tompkins County Poet Laureate and TvO member, for an evening reading and discussing a handful of great poems from across the rich and complicated tradition of modern Jewish poetry, including work by Emma Lazarus, Paul Celan, Dan Pagis, Yehuda Amichai, and others. This event will begin with readings of the poems, followed by a group-led discussion of them. We may also explore a poem by the great Palestinian poet Mahmoud Darwish, and a poem of Rosenberg’s that engages directly with issues of Jewish identity and heritage.

A Conversation About TVO’s Purpose, Identity and Affiliation

Sunday, May 4, 2-4 pm  (in person only) at Tikkun v’Or

Some of you have asked the Big Jewcy Question “Ok, so what exactly are we gonna be talking about on May 4? Why are we talking and should I really come to another session?”

BJQ sessions themselves are lively, interesting and help us to get to know one another better. Specifically, this session will provide the opportunity for congregants to share their views on some pretty BIG Jewcy Questions the Board and the congregation are wrestling with this year.

What do you think is core to the TVO identity and what do you want to be as a congregation?

How can TVO meaningfully accommodate —and embrace and celebrate - the diversity of viewpoints within our congregationWhat attracts people to our congregation? What keeps them away?

What things feel important to you or even essential for us to maintain a sense of Jewish continuity, character and content?

How do our responses to the above affect our decisions about TVO’s affiliation? What does it mean to be affiliated with the Reform movement? The Reconstructionist movement? With no movement at all ?

WHY ARE WE TALKING ABOUT THIS?

We are a congregation with diverse and sometimes conflicting views. We want to use this time to figure out what keeps us connected. We are trying to be more effective with our “in-reach” and our outreach.  We want to better understand what our existing members care about, what will keep people from leaving, and what people think will enable us to attract new members.

Registration is encouraged but not required. Refreshments will be served

Join Lauren Monroe for this opportunity to Talk Torah (and the other books of the Hebrew Bible) – your questions will be our guide!  She will pick her favorites from the questions generated at her session in December, and we’ll go from there, generating more questions for future discussions.
Each session is a stand-alone - no need to have attended the last one.

Lauren Monroe grew up in the Reform movement, at Temple Beth Elohim, in Brooklyn, NY.  As a Jewish Studies major in college at SUNY Albany, she fell in love with reading and interpreting Jewish texts. Lauren received her PhD in Bible and Ancient Near East from the Skirball Department of Hebrew and Judaic Studies at New York University.  At Cornell, she teaches courses in Hebrew Bible, Biblical Hebrew, Archaeology, and Ancient Israelite Religious and Social History.

    Registration is requested.

    In person only.
